The Evolution of the GLE53

For the 2027 model year, Mercedes has updated its midsize GLE lineup, with the standout addition being the Mercedes-AMG GLE53 PHEV. This new plug-in hybrid variant integrates an AMG-tuned version of the 3.0-liter turbocharged M256M Evo inline-6 engine, paired with a 181-horsepower electric motor and a 25.3-kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack. Available in both traditional SUV and coupe body styles, the vehicle starts at $98,400 and $99,450 respectively.

Performance and Efficiency

Despite a significant weight increase—reaching over 6,100 pounds for the SUV variant—the addition of electric torque allows the 2027 GLE53 to hit 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, shaving 0.8 seconds off the previous model's time. The vehicle features a notable electric-only range, with testing confirming the EPA estimate of approximately 45 miles. Furthermore, the inclusion of a 60-kW DC fast-charging port allows the battery to replenish from 10% to 80% in roughly 20 minutes.

Driving Dynamics and Ride Quality

One of the most impressive aspects of the new GLE53 is the comfort provided by the re-tuned AMG Ride Control+ air suspension. Even when equipped with 22-inch wheels, the vehicle maintains a plush ride in Comfort mode, successfully avoiding the harshness found in smaller AMG models. When pushed into Sport or Sport+ modes, the character changes significantly, delivering a responsive and engaging drive. As noted by the driver:

«The powertrain never felt overtly distinct from an ICE-only powertrain, with seamless hybrid system operation and consistent inputs.»

Interior and Ergonomics

While the mechanical upgrades are substantial, the interior retains some of the familiar quirks of the current-generation GLE. The dashboard is dominated by the large "Superscreen" infotainment setup. However, there are some lingering critiques regarding material choices, such as the use of vinyl sun visors and certain plastic trim elements, as well as limited storage options in the front cabin. Additionally, while the seats offer good support, some drivers may find the bolster adjustments and seating positions less aggressive than what one might expect from a vehicle bearing the AMG badge.

The Verdict

The GLE53 PHEV occupies a unique space, offering a compelling middle ground between the standard GLE models and the high-performance GLE63 S. It successfully delivers a blend of efficiency, daily usability, and high-performance capabilities, making it a strong choice for those who desire a spirited, electrified SUV without committing to the full-bore demands of a V8-powered AMG.
