A Modern Revival of Efficiency

Audi is preparing to launch the A2 e-tron, a compact electric hatchback that pays homage to the revolutionary, efficiency-focused A2 of the early 2000s. Set to make its full debut this fall, the German manufacturer has already positioned the vehicle as the most efficient model in its history.


Aerodynamic Mastery and Performance

Engineers have prioritized drag reduction to maximize energy usage. The new A2 e-tron features a sophisticated array of aerodynamic enhancements, including active front air intakes, air curtains, and specialized gap reducers. With the optional efficiency package, the vehicle achieves a drag coefficient of just 0.24, which is the lowest among Audi's compact lineup.


Preliminary testing under the WLTP cycle has yielded an impressive efficiency rating of 4.85 miles per kilowatt-hour. This performance is supported by several technical advancements, including:

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors in the power electronics.
  • Low-friction transmission oil.
  • Optimized electric motor laminations to reduce energy loss.
  • A refined battery thermal management system that boosts home charging efficiency to 89.6%.

Advanced Battery Technology

The core of the A2 e-tron is a 58-kilowatt-hour (61 kWh gross) lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery. The model utilizes a "cell-to-pack" configuration, which integrates cells directly into the cradle to save space and increase energy density without adding bulk. For those seeking even greater utility, the vehicle supports both vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) capabilities, allowing owners to power external appliances or even their homes.


Powertrain Options and Pricing

While the standard model features a 187-horsepower (140 kW) rear-mounted electric motor, reports suggest a diverse lineup of configurations will follow. Future iterations are expected to range from 167 hp up to 321 hp. Additionally, higher-tier models may offer a 79 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery pack, potentially providing a range of up to 403 miles.


With a starting price point expected around €38,200 ($44,000), the A2 e-tron is set to become the most accessible entry point into Audi’s electric vehicle portfolio.
