Engineering for More Than Speed

At the time of its release in 2006, the Cayenne Turbo S stood as the second most powerful production vehicle in Porsche's lineup, trailing only the legendary Carrera GT. With 520 horsepower generated by enhanced intercoolers and increased turbo pressure, it boasted a top speed of 168 mph. However, its true capabilities extend well beyond high-speed highway driving.

During testing in Dubai, the vehicle proved that its hardware is built to handle significant abuse. The combination of permanent all-wheel drive, the sophisticated Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system, and adjustable air-spring suspension allowed the 5,200-pound SUV to navigate challenging terrain with ease.

Off-Road Versatility and PTM

The Cayenne’s off-road performance relies on its intelligent power distribution:

  • Standard Conditions: PTM directs 62 percent of torque to the rear wheels, maintaining a sporty driving dynamic.
  • Low-Traction Situations: If slippage is detected, the system can transfer the majority of power to the axle with better grip via a longitudinal differential lock.
  • Extreme Terrain: A low-range mode recalibrates ABS, traction control, and differential settings, while raising the ride height by over an inch.
  • Advanced Capability: Activating the low-range switch twice fully locks the drive system and boosts ground clearance to 10.8 inches.

For those seeking even more rugged performance, an optional Advanced Offroad Technology Package provides added protection, including a rear differential lock and decoupled anti-roll bars for better wheel articulation.

Performance and Practicality

The Turbo S is undeniably quick, capable of a 0-to-60 mph sprint in approximately 4.8 seconds. While its price tag significantly exceeded the standard Cayenne Turbo and Cayenne S models, it offered a unique blend of luxury and utility. Even in soft sand, the vehicle performed admirably, requiring only a simple reduction in tire pressure—easily managed thanks to the standard tire-pressure monitoring system and on-board compressor.

The Porsche Leipzig Experience

To truly understand the capabilities of such a machine, Porsche offers customers an immersive experience at their Customer Center in Leipzig, Germany. Beyond touring the production facility, owners can utilize an FIA-certified test track and a 3.7-mile off-road course.

«The center's headquarters rises like a diamond-shaped UFO from the plains of Lower Saxony just north of Leipzig, and it houses Cayenne production, a historical-car collection, conference rooms, gourmet restaurant, Porsche Design boutique, customer delivery and VIP lounges.»

The facility features a 2.3-mile track designed with corners inspired by famous global circuits, such as Laguna Seca’s Corkscrew and the Nurburgring’s Mobil 1 chicane, allowing drivers to explore the full potential of their vehicles under the guidance of expert instructors.
