The End of an Era for the Bavarian Roadster

BMW has officially ceased the manufacturing of the Z4, concluding a notable 25-year run for one of the automaker’s most iconic sports cars. The final unit was completed at the Magna Steyr plant located in Graz, Austria. This milestone signifies a major transition for the German manufacturer, as it is the first time in over thirty years that the brand will not feature a two-seat convertible in its portfolio.

Evolution of the Z4 Line

First debuting in 2003, the Z4 was positioned as the natural successor to the Z3. Throughout its three generations, the vehicle successfully bridged the gap between raw sports car performance and luxury comfort. It established itself as a staple within the BMW Z Series by offering a blend of agile handling and a distinct aesthetic that resonated with both driving enthusiasts and premium-market consumers.

«The Z4 maintained its status as a favorite among driving purists, particularly due to its rare preservation of the manual transmission in an increasingly automated automotive market.»

A Final Farewell to the G29

As the curtain fell on the Z4, BMW commemorated the occasion in late 2024 with the launch of the G29 Final Edition. This swan song model was distinguished by its specialized Frozen Black exterior finish and Shadowline aesthetic enhancements. Under the hood, it housed a robust 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine, capable of generating 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. Customers were offered a choice between a traditional six-speed manual gearbox and an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the final models starting at $78,675.

The Future of the Z Series

With the discontinuation of this model, the future of the Z Series remains uncertain. To date, BMW has not provided information regarding a potential successor, leaving the roadster category vacant for the time being. Enthusiasts looking for open-top driving experiences within the BMW family will now need to look toward the 4 Series range, which includes options such as the high-performance M4 Competition xDrive Convertible.
