Nissan has categorized its braking performance into five primary color tiers, each signaling a different level of engineering optimization:


  • Silver: This is the standard finish for everyday driving. While these systems offer reliable and smooth stopping power for standard road conditions, they are not engineered for the high-intensity demands of track use.
  • Red: These signify a clear step up toward high performance. Featured on models like the 2027 Nissan Z Performance, these aluminum Akebono calipers provide enhanced braking hardware compared to base models, complete with larger rotors and a more robust piston configuration.
  • Bright Red: Exclusive to the NISMO range, this vibrant hue denotes a specialized performance upgrade. These calipers are treated with high-temperature-resistant coatings and are paired with advanced iron-aluminum rotors derived from GT-R technology to handle more aggressive driving.
  • Gold: Long considered the hallmark of Nissan’s premium performance, gold calipers signify the inclusion of Brembo hardware. Historically linked to the legendary R34 and R35 GT-R models, this finish represents a high level of precision engineering that has become iconic among enthusiasts.
  • Yellow: Representing the pinnacle of the lineup, yellow calipers are the rarest and most track-oriented option. They indicate the presence of ultra-high-performance carbon-ceramic brakes. Beyond the Standard Rules

While the color hierarchy provides a reliable guide, Nissan occasionally deviates from these conventions for special editions or concept vehicles. For instance, the 2020 GT-R-50 by Italdesign utilized custom red Brembo units, and the 2023 Z Proto Spec featured yellow Akebono calipers that, unlike the track-focused ceramic versions, were not carbon-ceramic.
