Nestled adjacent to Volkswagen’s massive production facility in Wolfsburg, Germany, lies Autostadt—a sprawling 70-acre destination that functions as a premier theme park dedicated to the world of automobiles. The site features dedicated pavilions for every brand under the Volkswagen Group umbrella, offering visitors an immersive experience into the history, cultural impact, and evolution of car design.
A Hub for Automotive History
Since its opening in May 2000, Autostadt has attracted approximately two million visitors annually. Beyond the marque-specific pavilions, the site hosts the Zeithaus, a museum specifically curated to showcase the progression of automotive engineering and design, featuring a remarkably eclectic collection that extends well beyond Volkswagen products.
Key Exhibits in the Zeithaus
The collection within the Zeithaus highlights pivotal moments in transport history:
- Pioneering Designs: The 1899 Benz Velo Convertible stands as a tribute to Karl Benz’s early contributions to mobility.
- The Beetle Legacy: The museum displays both the 1938 original and the very last Volkswagen Beetle, which rolled off the assembly line in Mexico in 2003. With a 64-year production run, it remains one of the longest-produced models in history.
- Iconic Classics: The exhibit includes legendary vehicles like the Ford Model T, credited with revolutionizing mass production, and the classic Mini, celebrated for its enduring engineering.
- Sporting Heritage: Motorsport enthusiasts can view vehicles like the Formula Super Vee, the 1981 Audi Quattro, and the Opel Ascona 400, the latter being the car that secured Walter Röhrl his 1982 World Rally Championship title.
Volkswagen’s Evolutionary Journey
The museum provides a comprehensive look at Volkswagen's own growth, from the 1950 Type 2 Transporter (Camper Van) to the 1970 411 LE and the 1961 Type 3. Visitors can also see experimental and high-performance rarities, such as the 2007 Golf W12-650, the most powerful Golf ever built, which remains a non-saleable prototype.
The Architectural Marvel: The AutoTürme
One of the most striking features of Autostadt are the AutoTürme—two glass towers capable of housing 400 vehicles each. Utilizing high-speed robotic lifts, these towers serve as delivery points for new Volkswagen Group vehicles. Customers from across Europe can opt to collect their new cars directly from these towers, offering a unique alternative to the traditional dealership experience.
Beyond the Museum
Autostadt offers more than just static displays. The grounds are filled with brand-specific pavilions, such as the Porsche pavilion, which features intricate metal models of the brand's history. Combined with driving experiences, specialized exhibitions, and various restaurants, Autostadt remains a cornerstone for automotive enthusiasts worldwide.
