A Connection Beyond Ownership

Few vehicles are as intrinsically tied to a Formula 1 icon as the Honda NSX is to Ayrton Senna. One of three vehicles specifically allocated for the legendary driver's personal use is preparing for a high-profile appearance at RM Sotheby's London auction. Industry experts estimate the final sale price will fall between £500,000 and £800,000.

The 1991 model, carrying chassis number T000233, served as Senna’s primary transport whenever he visited Portugal. Painted in the classic Formula Red with a black roof and matching leather interior, it became an iconic symbol of the three-time World Champion's life away from the track.

The "Hosepipe" NSX

The vehicle is instantly recognizable to fans, having featured in the documentary Ayrton Senna: Racing Is In My Blood, where the driver famously demonstrated his spirited driving style. Enthusiasts also frequently refer to it as the "hosepipe" NSX, a nickname derived from widely circulated photographs that captured the F1 star casually washing the car in his driveway.

Senna’s Influence on Development

Senna’s involvement with the NSX was far more than promotional. His collaboration with the Japanese manufacturer grew significantly after he joined the Honda-powered McLaren team in 1988. During the car's testing phase, Senna provided critical feedback on an early prototype. According to reports, he noted that the chassis felt «a little fragile,» which directly led engineers to increase structural rigidity by nearly 50 percent and refine the suspension geometry.

This input ensured that the final production version was lauded for its unique blend of exotic performance, daily comfort, and legendary Honda reliability.

Provenance and Preservation

The car’s history is meticulously documented. Registered in Portugal on March 22, 1991, it was based in Lisbon for Senna's use near his home in Quinta do Lago. It even served as his transport during the 1991 Portuguese Grand Prix weekend.

Following Senna's death in 1994, the vehicle passed through several hands in Portugal and eventually arrived in the United Kingdom in 2016. After a notable appearance at Imola for the 25th anniversary of Senna’s passing, the car is now being readied for its next chapter.

Potential buyers are encouraged to view this not merely as a financial asset, but as an irreplaceable artifact. As noted by industry analysts, the value of the car is driven by its genuine connection to Senna. The ideal future for this vehicle involves a caretaker dedicated to preserving its history while allowing it to be showcased at major automotive and Formula 1 events, keeping the legacy of the legendary Brazilian driver alive for future generations.
