An Introduction to the Leapmotor B05

Known in its home market as the Lafa 5, the Leapmotor B05 represents a departure from the company's usual naming conventions. While the firm’s founder, Jangling Zhu, reportedly chose the name for its unique appeal, the vehicle is being rebranded as the B05 for international markets. This shift aligns it more cohesively with the B10 SUV, marking a strategic move by Leapmotor International, the joint venture between the Chinese automaker and Stellantis.

Measuring just under 4.5 meters in length with a 2.7-meter wheelbase, the B05 enters the highly competitive C-segment. While its design subtly echoes the proportions of the Volkswagen Golf, its architecture as an EV with a rear-mounted motor places it in direct competition with models like the Volkswagen ID.3.

Technical Specifications and Performance

The international version of the B05 is expected to arrive in its most potent configuration. The vehicle is powered by a 215bhp motor, capable of reaching 0-62mph in approximately 6.7 seconds. Its 67.1kWh battery supports a range of 300 miles on the WLTP cycle and offers rapid charging capabilities of up to 170kW.

A key innovation in the B05 is the 'cell-to-chassis' battery integration, which allows for a lower cabin profile compared to typical skateboard-platform EVs. Regarding its suspension, the car utilizes MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear, with tuning refinements developed in collaboration with Stellantis to meet European driving expectations.

Interior Design and Equipment

Inside the cabin, the focus is on a tech-forward experience featuring a 14.6-inch HD touchscreen and an 8.8-inch driver display. Key vehicle settings, including drive modes and steering adjustments, are managed through the central interface. While some drivers might prefer more physical controls, the cabin offers a spacious and airy environment, bolstered by a panoramic sunroof and durable, well-finished materials.

The standard equipment list is notably generous, with the only primary choices involving interior color schemes. Additionally, the car features frameless doors, providing an upscale aesthetic rarely found at this price point.

Initial Driving Impressions

Early tests suggest that the B05 offers a responsive driving experience rather than extreme performance. The handling remains composed during cornering, and the ride quality proves resilient over uneven surfaces. While comprehensive evaluations of its advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are still pending, the vehicle demonstrates significant potential.

«The B05 adds a whiff of dynamism to the Leapmotor formula. It feels unlikely to match class leaders, but stylish design and plenty of kit could make it a tempting budget alternative.»

With an estimated starting price expected to sit below the B10’s £30,000 threshold, the Leapmotor B05 is positioned to be an attractive, value-driven alternative to established rivals like the Cupra Born and the Renault Megane E-Tech.
