From Prototype to Production
The British manufacturer McMurtry has officially opened orders for the production-ready variant of its legendary Spéirling hypercar, officially dubbed the Spéirling Pure. With a price tag hovering around £1 million ($1.3 million), this vehicle transitions from a prototype that famously conquered the Goodwood Hillclimb in a mere 39.08 seconds in 2022 to a refined machine designed for track enthusiasts.
Refinements and Enhanced Performance
While the original prototype was built purely for speed records, the Pure model introduces several user-friendly improvements. The chassis has undergone a significant adjustment, with the wheelbase extended from two meters to 2.2 meters. This change serves a dual purpose: it improves stability and provides the necessary space for a larger 100kWh battery pack, significantly boosting the vehicle's endurance on the track.
Design and Usability Upgrades
McMurtry has focused on making the hypercar more accessible and practical for owners. The vehicle now features a hinged door to simplify cabin entry and exit. Additional design tweaks include:
- A storage compartment located beneath the 'swan-neck' rear wing, specifically sized for a helmet and HANS safety equipment.
- Integrated headlights, enabling drivers to take the car out for night-time circuit sessions.
- A driver-focused cockpit featuring custom-moulded seats and a bespoke steering wheel with essential controls and an integrated data display.
Advanced Fan Technology
The hallmark of the Spéirling is its unique 'downforce-on-demand' system. The manufacturer has updated this technology with more durable blades and a repositioned assembly to optimize the vehicle's center of gravity. Regarding the system's capability, the company notes: «The system can generate up to 2,000kg of downforce at the press of a button and at a standstill, allowing the Spéirling to achieve up to 3g of force when braking.» The high-speed fans effectively anchor the car to the tarmac, enabling a 0-60 mph sprint in just 1.55 seconds and a top speed reaching 180 mph.
