A Two-Decade Journey to Completion
While Rolls-Royce produced 374 examples of the Phantom VI between 1968 and 1990, the vast majority featured standard Mulliner Park Ward coachwork. A notable exception is a 1971 model currently listed on Bring a Trailer, which boasts a custom body by Italian designer Pietro Frua and a history more complex than most vehicles of its stature.
The project began in 1971 when British developer Robert “Bobby” Buchanan-Michaelson commissioned a custom Phantom VI. Frua designed a unique four-door all-weather cabriolet, but the build faced significant delays. After passing to American collector James Leake in 1977, the project suffered further setbacks following Pietro Frua’s passing in 1983. Ultimately, Royle Cars of Durham, England, took over the work, finally unveiling the finished vehicle at the 1993 Geneva Motor Show—22 years after its inception.
Engineering and Bespoke Luxury
Measuring approximately 21 feet in length, this grand machine is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The exterior is finished in Claret with cream pinstriping, complemented by a versatile three-position soft top that allows for sedanca de ville, landaulet, or convertible configurations, thanks to retractable B-pillars.
The interior showcases an extraordinary level of craftsmanship:
- Champagne-colored Connolly leather upholstery throughout both compartments.
- Burl walnut and sterling silver trim adorning the dashboard, doors, and center console.
- A power-operated divider window separating the driver and passenger areas.
- Rear-cabin amenities including jump seats, writing trays, a dedicated cocktail cabinet, and a vintage TV/VCR setup.
According to the seller, the vehicle underwent a comprehensive service in April 2026, which included the installation of new bias-ply tires, a fresh battery, and a rebuilt brake master cylinder.
Auction Context and History
This particular Phantom VI has appeared at several prestigious events and auctions over the years. It was presented at the 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and has previously crossed the auction block at high-profile events like Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach sale and RM Sotheby’s in Monterey. As noted by the seller, the car was recently listed on Bring a Trailer in May 2026, though that attempt did not reach a final sale.
Regarding claims of its original purchase price, the seller suggests it was sold new for 2.1 million pounds—allegedly a record at the time. However, independent verification of this specific figure remains unconfirmed, and it should be viewed as a claim rather than verified historical fact.
Note: Potential bidders should verify all auction details, including end times and current bid status, directly via the official Bring a Trailer listing.
