A recent real-world evaluation conducted by independent EV expert Bjørn Nyland has provided fresh insights into the capabilities of the Kia EV5 Long Range FWD. Tested in temperatures ranging from 54 to 57 degrees Fahrenheit (12-14 degrees Celsius), the SUV demonstrated that while it is a practical choice for many, its highway performance faces certain challenges.

The vehicle showed a notable divide in efficiency depending on speed. At slower, non-highway speeds, the EV5 reached a range of 261 miles (420 kilometers). However, when pushed to highway speeds of 75 mph (120 km/h), energy consumption rose significantly by nearly 40%. Nyland attributed this performance drop to the car's “boxy” design, which inherently increases wind resistance during sustained high-speed travel.


Design and Practicality

Beyond range metrics, the assessment highlighted the vehicle's interior utility. Despite measuring only 15.1 feet (4.6 meters) in length, the EV5 offers impressive room for both passengers and cargo. Nyland described the vehicle as being more "low-tech" when compared to competitors like Tesla or Zeekr, but emphasized that personal preference plays a major role in vehicle selection.

“So in that regard, if you like Hyundai Kia, then this is right down your alley, and you will not be disappointed,” Nyland noted.

Standard manufacturer estimates can sometimes differ from the experience of owners driving in varying weather conditions or at high speeds.
