Pricing and California Incentives
The highly anticipated Slate electric pickup has finally confirmed its final base price for consumers. While the company previously discussed a starting point of $24,950, the inclusion of a mandatory $1,450 destination fee brings the total entry-level cost to $26,400. Despite this update, the vehicle remains positioned as one of the most affordable electric trucks on the market.
Consumers in California may benefit significantly from local programs. Following the enactment of the MyFirstEV program by Governor Gavin Newsom, first-time EV buyers in the state are eligible for a $3,500 rebate at the point of sale. This incentive effectively lowers the purchase price of the Slate pickup to approximately $22,900 for eligible California residents.
Competitive Positioning
When compared to traditional internal combustion engine trucks, the Slate offers a distinct cost advantage. For perspective, standard mid-size pickups such as the Ford Maverick, Hyundai Santa Cruz, and Nissan Frontier generally start at significantly higher price points, often exceeding $30,000. To maintain affordability while allowing for personalization, the company plans to launch a “Slate Marketplace” featuring over 200 accessories, the majority of which are priced under $500.
Key Specifications and Performance
Slate has provided updated technical details for its upcoming release, which is scheduled for initial deliveries in the fourth quarter of this year:
- Battery and Range: The vehicle now utilizes a single 65 kWh LFP battery, offering an estimated range of 205 miles.
- Charging: Equipped with a NACS port, the truck supports Tesla Supercharger speeds of up to 120 kW, while a home Level 2 charger can reach full capacity in four hours.
- Capability: The towing capacity has been increased to 2,000 lbs, with a payload capacity now rated at 1,550 lbs.
- Performance: The rear-wheel-drive electric motor produces 181 horsepower, allowing the 4,048-pound vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8 seconds.
“Slate gives customers the freedom to buy only what they need today and personalize their vehicle as their needs change tomorrow,” said CEO Peter Faricy.
The company reports over 180,000 reservation holders currently in line. Customers who previously placed a $50 reservation can upgrade to a full preorder by adding $250, securing their priority for upcoming production units.
