Venturing into the Electric Unknown
Subaru is expanding its electric portfolio with the launch of the Uncharted, a sub-compact crossover designed to capture the brand's traditional adventurous DNA. While it serves as the company's second EV following the Solterra, it marks a significant shift as the first model in their lineup to offer a front-wheel-drive configuration.
Platform Collaboration and Pricing
Under the surface, the Uncharted is built upon the same platform as the Toyota C-HR+. By utilizing this shared architecture, Subaru has managed to make the transition to electric mobility roughly 10% more affordable for consumers compared to its larger sibling, the Solterra. With a starting price of €36,990, the vehicle positions itself as a competitive option in the growing electric crossover segment.
Practicality and Interior Space
Despite being smaller than the Solterra—measuring 14 centimeters shorter in length—the Uncharted offers a surprisingly roomy cabin. Its interior layout is designed for comfort, and the cargo area provides between 403 and 1,323 liters of space. While it lacks a front storage compartment ("frunk"), the clever use of a dual-load floor system ensures that owners can maximize storage for everyday utility.
Performance and Handling
The standout feature of the Uncharted is its agile handling. Engineers have leveraged the rigid battery-electric platform to create a vehicle that feels taut and responsive on the road. The suspension is tuned for comfort, while the cabin remains impressively quiet, minimizing wind noise during long drives.
Driving Dynamics and Powertrains
The driving experience varies significantly depending on the configuration:
- Entry-level models: Equipped with a 167 hp (123 kW) motor, these models offer a respectable 0-100 km/h time of 8.4 seconds.
- Mid-tier FWD: Provides 224 hp (165 kW) for a bit more punch.
- AWD Variants: These offer 343 hp (252 kW), allowing the car to hit 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds, aided by specialized drive modes for challenging terrain.
Charging and Range
The vehicle is available with two battery options: a 57.7 kWh pack providing 451 km of range, and a 77 kWh pack extending that to 592 km. Regarding charging, the Uncharted supports 22 kW AC charging, though its DC fast-charging is capped at 150 kW.
«While some rivals offer faster peak charging speeds, Subaru aims for consistency with a broad charging curve,» the manufacturer noted. The system supports pre-conditioning to maintain efficiency in cold weather, allowing for a 10% to 80% charge in approximately 28 minutes, even in freezing temperatures.
The Verdict
The Subaru Uncharted is a well-rounded contender. While it may not revolutionize the EV market, it brings a reliable, stable, and surprisingly capable vehicle to the compact segment. Its lower center of gravity ensures that it performs admirably both on city streets and on rougher trails, maintaining the rugged reputation that Subaru fans expect.
