Standing at the pinnacle of high-performance trucking is the Volvo Iron Knight. In 2016, this vehicle shattered expectations by securing world records in the standing 500-meter and 1,000-meter sprints, while hitting an incredible top speed of 171 mph. To appreciate the scale of this achievement, compare it to standard highway speeds, which rarely exceed 65 mph. Nearly a decade later, the Iron Knight’s dominance remains unchallenged.

Beneath its aggressive, aerodynamic exterior lies a 12.8-liter inline-six turbo-diesel engine that pushes the boundaries of automotive engineering. This machine produces a staggering 4,425 lb-ft of torque and generates 2,400 horsepower. To put that into perspective, the Iron Knight possesses the combined power of two Bugatti Veyron Super Sports. During the official FIA-monitored record attempts, the truck hit 81.57 mph within just 500 meters and reached 105 mph over the 1,000-meter mark, both starting from a standstill.
Engineering for Speed
Achieving such velocity requires more than just raw engine power; it demands precision engineering. The Iron Knight utilizes a custom I-Shift dual-clutch transmission, which ensures seamless gear changes to prevent any loss of momentum during acceleration. Furthermore, the vehicle features bespoke lightweight bodywork crafted from fiberglass to improve aerodynamics. Reflecting on the truck's performance, the project was steered by Boije Ovebrink, a champion of European Truck Racing, who piloted the vehicle during its record-shattering runs.
