BMW will cease U.S. allocation of its iX electric SUV this year, concluding the run of its first dedicated EV model. The automaker stated the iX served as a technological showcase since its 2022 launch but its phase-out is part of the progression toward its next generation of electric vehicles.
The new era, dubbed Neue Klasse, will be spearheaded by models like the all-electric iX3 SUV arriving in the U.S. this summer. Dozens of new models are planned in the coming years. Canadian production of the iX will continue slightly longer, wrapping up in October with no 2027 model year planned.
The iX, alongside the XM, acted as a flagship showcasing BMW's engineering, focusing on all-electric comfort. Sales were reasonably strong but dipped from 17,301 units in 2023 to 12,587 last year, reflecting a softened post-tax-credit demand.
BMW's strategy involves offering both combustion and electric variants of its core models (like the 5 Series, 7 Series, and X3), which leaves little room for a standalone iX. Its role will likely be filled by upcoming models like the iX3 and a presumed iX5.
While the iX will be missed for its interior and ride quality, strong European demand for the iX3 suggests a bright future for its Neue Klasse successors.
